Correlation study of indices on health status and social progress among Indian states

Introduction:
The health status of a population is determined by biological, behavioural, environmental, immunological, nutritional, genetic and social factors. Two prominent measures of health status are the Burden of Disease (BoD) and Health Index (HI). Another measure called the Social Progress Index (SPI) reflects the socio-economic status of a nation. We aim to correlate the indices to understand their inter-relationships.
Methods:
Data were abstracted into MS Excel, tabulated and analysed R. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to correlate SPI and HI. Quantum Geographic Information System (Q-GIS), a free open-source software to analyse, create and map spatial data was used for visualisation.
Results:
Pearson's correlation coefficient showed a positive relation between SPI and HI. While a negative correlation was found when these two indices were correlated with BoD measures for communicable diseases (death rate and disability-adjusted life year), injuries and a positive correlation is observed with non-communicable diseases.
Conclusion:
We hypothesise that social progress and health are associated.
