Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if cataract surgery is a risk factor for new-onset thyroid eye disease (TED) in patients with prior thyroid disorders.
  • To assess the incidence of TED outcomes and need for orbital decompression surgery after cataract extraction.

Main Methods:

  • A population-level database of deidentified electronic health records was analyzed.
  • Propensity score matching balanced cohorts of patients who underwent cataract extraction based on demographics and comorbidities.
