Muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) changes with cycling intensity. In severe exercise, MFCV decreases, indicating fatigue, while it increases in heavy exercise, showing MFCV is a robust fatigue marker.
Area of Science:
- Neuromuscular Physiology
- Exercise Science
- Biophysics
Background:
- High-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) is a tool for assessing neuromuscular function.
- Muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) quantifies action potential speed along muscle fibers.
- Limited data exists on MFCV during dynamic exercise.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate changes in vastus lateralis MFCV during cycling in heavy and severe intensity domains.
- To compare MFCV with averaged rectified values (ARV) from HD-sEMG.
- To assess the intra-individual variability of MFCV and ARV.
Main Methods:
- Participants performed cycling exercise in heavy and severe intensity domains.
- HD-sEMG signals were recorded from the vastus lateralis muscle.
- MFCV and ARV were calculated and compared.
- Intra-individual variability was analyzed.
Main Results:
- In the severe domain, MFCV decreased (4.44 to 4.03 m·s⁻¹).
- In the heavy domain, MFCV increased (4.56 to 5.02 m·s⁻¹).
- MFCV demonstrated lower intra-individual variability compared to ARV.
Conclusions:
- MFCV responses differ between heavy and severe cycling intensities.
- MFCV is a more robust indicator of myoelectric fatigue than ARV during dynamic contractions like cycling.

Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...
