Anisotropic density of states of light in uniaxial crystals
Abstract:
We obtained the angular-resolved density of states of light in uniaxial crystals through the analysis of a differential volume occupied by the eigenwaves in the wave vector space. A general formula for the angular density of states of the extraordinary light is presented in terms of the ray direction. As an application of our result, we explored the angular energy density and spectral radiance of blackbody radiation in uniaxial crystals. Numerical calculations are performed in LiNbO3, BBO, and CaCO3 crystals. Under small birefringence and small dispersion approximation, the anisotropicity of the angular density of states and the spectral radiance for the extraordinary light are found to be enhanced three and four times, respectively, when compared to the anisotropicity of the crystal.

Diffraction
Diffraction is the change in the direction of travel experienced by an electromagnetic wave when it encounters a physical barrier whose dimensions are comparable to those of the wavelength of the light. X-rays are electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths about as long as the distance between neighboring...
