Endosomal GTPases, while often used as markers for specific endosomal organelles, functionalize the surface of endosomal compartments into biochemically distinct subdomains. Their dynamic localization reshapes organelle identities, making it difficult to classify endosomes into rigid categories. In this review, we provide an overview of the functional diversity of endosomal organelles in the context of recent discoveries, highlighting the dynamic role of small GTPases in the organization of cargo trafficking and cargo identity. We suggest that a framework centred on functional subdomains coordinated by ARF and RAB GTPase networks provides an informed perspective on the organisation of endocytic and secretory systems and their crosstalk.

The maturing endosome moves along microtubules from the periphery of the cell towards the perinuclear region. This movement of the...

Coat Assembly and GTPases
Coat assembly depends on the local availability of phosphatidylinositol phosphates or PIPs and GTP-binding proteins. Adaptor proteins, which link the coat proteins to the membrane, bind to these PIPs and play a crucial role in controlling...
Golgi Apparatus
Golgi Apparatus
The Golgi apparatus is a eukaryotic organelle that has a distinctive ribbon-like appearance. It is a primary sorting and dispatch station for cargo arriving from the ER. Newly arriving vesicles enter the cis face of the Golgi, closest to the ER, and are...
