[Survey on chloropropanol esters content and characteristics in commercially available vegetable oils and exposure

Objective:
To investigate the levels of chloropropanol esters(MCPDE) in commercially available vegetable oils in 2022 and their potential dietary health risks.
Methods:
Dietary exposure assessment was conducted using the simple distribution approach, based on 2022 national food safety risk monitoring data and 2018-2020 national food consumption data.
Results:
The average detection rates of 3-monochloro-1, 2-propanediol(3-MCPDE) and 2-monochloro-1, 3-propanediol(2-MCPDE) in vegetable oils were 67.07% and 58.84%, respectively, with average concentrations of 0.86 and 0.47 mg/kg. The average exposure levels of 3-MCPDE and 2-MCPDE from vegetable oil intake in the general population were 0.374 and 0.204 μg/(kg·BW·d), respectively; for high-consumption individuals(P95), the exposure levels were 1.062 and 0.580 μg/(kg·BW·d). The average exposure levels across age groups ranged from 0.298 to 0.737 and 0.163 to 0.403 μg/(kg·BW·d), respectively; while P95 exposures ranged from 0.834 to 2.011 and 0.456 to 1.099 μg/(kg·BW·d), respectively. For the general population and the P95 group in China, the 3-MCPDE exposure from vegetable oil intake accounted for 9.4% and 26.6% of their provisional maximum tolerable daily intake(PMTDI), respectively. while the average and P95 exposure levels across all age groups accounted for 7.5%-18.4% and 20.9%-50.3% of their respective PMTDI.
Conclusion:
3-MCPDE and 2-MCPDE were detected in some commercially available vegetable oils in China, with 3-MCPDE levels higher than 2-MCPDE. Dietary exposure assessments indicate that the current health risk from 3-MCPDE in vegetable oils is low.
