Background:

  • Previous research suggests a link between high antioxidant intake and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk in older adults.
  • The association between the oxidative balance score (OBS) and CRC risk in the general population requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess oxidative stress (OS) status using the OBS, derived from dietary and lifestyle factors.
  • To explore the association between OBS and CRC risk among American adults.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study analyzed 44,482 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1999-2018), including 340 with CRC.
  • Weighted multivariate logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and restricted cubic spline curves were employed to evaluate the OBS-CRC association.
  • Sensitivity analyses were performed to confirm the robustness of the findings.

Main Results:

  • Each unit increase in OBS correlated with a 2.0% decrease in CRC risk (OR=0.98).
  • Individuals in the highest OBS tertile (T3) exhibited a significantly reduced CRC risk (OR=0.58).
  • A higher dietary OBS tertile (T3) was associated with lower CRC risk (OR=0.63), while lifestyle OBS showed no significant association.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated OBS and dietary OBS are associated with a decreased risk of colorectal cancer.
  • Adopting a healthy lifestyle and an antioxidant-rich diet may play a role in CRC prevention.
