ChatGPT in intervention planning: Advancing clinical relevance and targeted care in cognitive rehabilitation

We aim to introduce ChatGPT as a supportive tool in cognitive rehabilitation, examine the feasibility of its integration into clinical practice, and propose guidelines for its integration into evidence-based practice. The article is intended to provide a preliminary framework for how ChatGPT can be incorporated into cognitive rehabilitation therapy and does not serve as an empirical study.

We examine how artificial intelligence can assist cognitive rehabilitation interventionalists in targeting interventions to enhance clinical relevance. We present an illustrative intervention protocol guided by current cognitive rehabilitation principles and offer case examples demonstrating ChatGPT's role in creating clinically relevant practice activities tailored to individual needs.

Anecdotal feedback from patients was positive, with the patients reporting that practicing cognitive strategies using personally relevant information was enjoyable and easier to engage with compared to general practice tasks. This suggests that AI-generated tasks were engaging and relevant.

The two cases provide an initial demonstration of how ChatGPT could be used to support the generation of personally relevant practice stimuli in cognitive rehabilitation, though further research is needed to assess its effectiveness and broader applicability. Importantly, the interventionist's expertise and active role in treatment planning, strategy selection, and progress evaluation remain central to the therapeutic process. We suggest that AI be utilized only as a supplemental tool in cognitive rehabilitation therapy, preserving the interventionist's active role in the therapeutic process.
