Sexual Health Problems and Service Needs of Menopausal Women: A Mixed Method Study in Osun State Nigeria

This study aimed to describe the sexual health problems of menopausal women and the sexual health services required to promote their well-being and provide recommendations that could help improve sexual health during menopause.

A concurrent mixed-method design was used. Data were collected from menopausal women aged 40-65 years using a structured questionnaire (n = 420) and an in-depth interview guide (n = 20). Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, whereas qualitative data were subjected to content and thematic analysis.

The mean ages at menopause among the quantitative and qualitative participants were 47 ± 4.22 and 45 ± 3.38 years, respectively. Quantitative and qualitative findings indicated that participants most commonly experienced vaginal dryness, reduced sexual desire, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections, and pain during intercourse. Across both data strands, women also expressed similar needs, which included access to accurate and helpful information to navigate the menopausal period, improved sexual satisfaction, and the availability of contraceptive services to support safe sexual practices during this period.

The study provides insight into the sexual problems and needs of menopausal women, which may guide healthcare providers and policymakers in developing appropriate strategies aimed at enhancing the sexual health of this demographic.
