Abstract:
Reports have shown that polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB)-laden transformer oil are being used for the production of some street-vended packaged fried snacks in Nigeria by some vendors. Hence this study investigated the concentrations and potential human health risks from dietary ingestion of PCBs in street-vended packaged fried (SVF) snacks in Nigeria. Different SVF snacks from southwestern region of Nigeria were obtained and analyzed for 12 compounds of PCBs. The results showed the total PCB levels in the snack samples ranged from 158 to 340 μg/kg. Estimated daily intake (EDI) values for total PCBs ranged from 0.754 to 1.607 μg/kg bw/day for children and 0.210 to 0.447 μg/kg bw/day for adults. The hazard index (HI) values exceeded 1 in all samples, suggesting significant non-carcinogenic risk. Cancer risk values exceeded the USEPA benchmark of 1 × 10-6 in few samples. The study strongly recommends strict monitoring by regulatory agencies for the production SVF snacks in the country.
