Background:
Breast asymmetry is common among augmentation candidates, yet implant selection often relies on subjective judgment. This study evaluated whether three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning could improve preoperative assessment and postoperative breast symmetry.
Methods:
In this prospective randomized controlled study, 40 patients with breast asymmetry undergoing implant-based breast augmentation were randomly assigned to either a 3D laser scanning group or a conventional assessment group. In the 3D group, standardized digital measurements were used to guide implant selection, whereas in the control group implant selection was based on the surgeon's clinical experience and routine preoperative evaluation. Postoperative breast volume difference, projection difference, satisfaction scores, and complications were assessed at 12 months.
Results:
The 3D group showed significantly smaller bilateral breast volume differences (P < 0.05) and projection differences (P < 0.05). Patient satisfaction was higher in the 3D group (P < 0.05), while complication rates were low and comparable between groups (P > 0.05).
Conclusions:
3D laser scanning provides objective and accurate breast measurements, thereby facilitating optimized implant selection, better postoperative symmetry, and higher satisfaction. It serves as a valuable tool for individualized planning in breast augmentation.
