Area of Science:

  • Biomaterials Science
  • Surgical Innovation
  • Hemostasis Research

Background:

  • Effective hemostasis is crucial in nephron-sparing surgery.
  • Conventional fibrin glue may be insufficient under stringent bleeding conditions.
  • Novel sealant technologies are needed to improve surgical outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the hemostatic efficacy of photocurable gelatin versus fibrin glue.
  • To evaluate the need for adjunctive suturing with each sealant.
  • To assess the biocompatibility of photocurable gelatin in a partial nephrectomy model.

Main Methods:

  • A rabbit partial nephrectomy model was established.
  • Animals received either fibrin glue or photocurable gelatin.
  • Hemostasis was assessed by quantifying blood loss and the need for sutures; histological analysis was performed.

Main Results:

  • Photocurable gelatin significantly reduced bleeding volume compared to fibrin glue.
  • No additional suturing was required with photocurable gelatin, unlike fibrin glue.
  • Histological analysis revealed less inflammation with photocurable gelatin.

Conclusions:

  • Photocurable gelatin provides effective hemostasis, even under challenging conditions.
  • This sealant eliminates the need for sutures, overcoming limitations of fibrin glue.
  • Photocurable gelatin is a promising adjunct for hemostasis in nephron-sparing surgery.
