Background:

  • Subareolar breast abscess is an exceptionally rare condition in the male population.
  • Limited case reports exist regarding male breast abscesses.
  • Clinical signs include pain, swelling, tenderness, and abscess formation in the periareolar region.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the occurrence and management of subareolar breast abscess in males.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis was conducted on 11 male patients diagnosed with subareolar breast abscess between April 2014 and July 2024.

Main Results:

  • Most cases (9/11) were uncomplicated and idiopathic.
  • One patient had diabetes, and another had underlying breast carcinoma.
  • Treatment modalities included incision and drainage (7 cases), local debridement with antibiotics (1 case), needle aspiration (2 cases), and conservative antibiotic therapy (2 cases).
  • Staphylococcus was the predominant organism identified in pus cultures.

Conclusions:

  • Subareolar breast abscess is infrequent in males.
  • Incision and drainage is considered the primary treatment for uncomplicated male breast abscesses.
