This study shows a new double-encircling suture technique is safe and effective for repairing complete cyclodialysis, restoring eye pressure and improving vision.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Surgical Techniques
- Retinal Diseases
Background:
- Complete cyclodialysis, a condition involving a 360° tear in the ciliary body, often leads to hypotony and vision loss.
- Current surgical options for complete cyclodialysis have varying success rates and potential complications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a novel double-encircling continuous suture technique for surgical repair of complete (360°) cyclodialysis.
- To assess anatomical and functional outcomes following this new surgical approach.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective interventional case series of seven patients with complete cyclodialysis.
- Surgical repair involved a double-encircling continuous 10-0 polypropylene suture technique.
- Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT), intraocular pressure (IOP), and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were used for assessment.
Main Results:
- The double-encircling suture technique achieved anatomical reattachment of the ciliary body and resolved hypotony in 85.7% of cases.
- All patients experienced improved BCVA, with outcomes influenced by co-existing ocular conditions.
- Transient IOP elevation occurred postoperatively, necessitating additional glaucoma surgery in two patients.
Conclusions:
- The double-encircling continuous suture technique demonstrates reproducible safety and efficacy for complete cyclodialysis repair.
- This technique offers anatomical success and functional improvement for patients with this condition.
