Summary

Undocumented immigrants face trauma, increasing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) risk. Addressing post-migration deprivation can mitigate PTSD and reduce high-risk alcohol use in this vulnerable population.

Background:

Undocumented immigrants are a vulnerable group exposed to extensive trauma.
This population faces risks in their origin country, during migration, and in host countries.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify factors influencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) development in undocumented immigrants.
To examine the relationship between PTSD and high-risk health behaviors in France.

Main Methods:

A representative survey of 1,060 undocumented immigrants in Paris and Bordeaux.
Multivariate probit models were used for analysis.

Main Results:

54.1% experienced trauma; 17.2% had PTSD.
Factors increasing PTSD risk included seeking safety, undocumented entry, food insecurity, and poor housing.
PTSD correlated with increased high-risk alcohol consumption.

Conclusions:

While pre-migration factors are beyond host-country control, interventions addressing post-migration deprivation are crucial.
Targeting deprivation can reduce PTSD and substance use among undocumented immigrants in France.
