Background:
Stretched penile length (SPL) is a crucial metric in evaluating hypospadias. In this study, we aim to find whether there was any difference in the SPL in hypospadias patients when compared to the SPL of normal children of the same age group.
Materials And Methods:
This cross-sectional analytical study was done in the department of pediatric surgery at a tertiary institution in central India from November 2022 to April 2024 over a period of 18 months. All preoperative hypospadias patients under 14 years of age who underwent hypospadias repair were included in the study. The SPL was measured in supine position using the digital vernier calipers for accurate measurement and compared with the SPL of the normal healthy people of the same age group with the SPL nomogram. P value was then calculated (Statistical significance at P < 0.05) based on the number of patients who matched the SPL of the same age group as per the nomogram.
Results:
One hundred patients (46 patients with distal penile hypospadias, 19 mid-penile hypospadias, and 35 proximal penile hypospadias) with a mean age of 3.72 years were included in the study. Based on P values, lesser number of patients with proximal penile hypospadias were found to be matching with the SPL as per the nomogram, the proportion being statistically significant.
Conclusion:
This study highlights the significance of SPL measurement in preoperative planning of hypospadias repair, emphasizing the need for a personalized treatment approach to achieve better outcomes.
