Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate associations between chronological age and locomotor activity in senior horses using brief turnout recordings.
  • To determine if short-term actimetry can detect cross-sectional differences in activity levels related to age.
  • To explore the utility of paddock actimetry for monitoring group-level welfare in older horses.

Main Methods:

  • Observational study involving 28 senior Selle Français horses (17-35 years).
  • 122 two-hour paddock sessions were recorded using Polar Team Pro sensors to quantify total distance and mean speed.
  • Linear mixed-effects models were used to assess associations with age, adjusting for environmental factors.

  • Log-transformed total distance was negatively associated with age (p < 0.001), primarily driven by between-horse differences.
  • Mean speed also showed a significant negative association with age between horses (q = 0.003).

  • Brief paddock actimetry can detect between-horse variations in locomotor activity related to age in senior horses.
  • This method shows promise for supporting group-level welfare monitoring in equine populations.
