Organ dose modulation (ODM) significantly reduces radiation exposure in CT scans, particularly for thorax and abdomen imaging. Applying ODM to the entire scan field optimizes dose reduction and maintains image quality, contradicting some vendor recommendations.
Area of Science:
- Medical Imaging
- Radiological Physics
- Radiation Dosimetry
Background:
- Computed Tomography (CT) utilizes ionizing radiation, necessitating strategies to minimize patient dose.
- Organ Dose Modulation (ODM) is a technique designed to reduce radiation exposure during CT scans.
- Optimizing ODM application is crucial for balancing dose reduction and diagnostic image quality.
Purpose of the Study:
- To quantify the effective dose reduction achieved with Organ Dose Modulation (ODM) on a GE Revolution Apex CT scanner.
- To assess the impact of ODM on image quality, specifically signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
- To evaluate the efficacy of ODM across different scan protocols (thorax, abdomen, head).
Main Methods:
- Determined comparable image quality (SNR) with and without ODM using a PMMA phantom.
- Measured radiation dose at 10° intervals using an ionization chamber for thorax, abdomen, and head protocols.
- Estimated effective dose using Monte Carlo simulations (PCXMC) at various kVp settings (80, 100, 120 kVp).
Main Results:
- Effective dose reduction of 12-14% (thorax) and 12-13% (abdomen) was observed with ODM.
- No significant change in effective dose for head CT protocols.
- Significant dose reduction in radiosensitive organs: 19-21% for breasts and 25% for eye lenses.
Conclusions:
- ODM effectively reduces both effective and organ-specific radiation doses without compromising image quality.
- Applying ODM to the entire scan field is recommended for optimal dose reduction and consistent image quality.
- Findings contradict vendor recommendations suggesting localized ODM application for specific organs.
