Background:

  • Sports performance relies on strength, power, and balance.
  • Dynamic balance and hip strength impact hop performance, but their interaction is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if dynamic balance predicts hop performance in healthy Danes.
  • To examine if this prediction differs based on hip muscle strength levels.

Main Methods:

  • 135 healthy volunteers (18-50 years) underwent dynamic balance (Y-Balance test) and single-leg hop for distance tests.
  • Maximal isometric hip strength (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction) was measured.
  • Linear regression analyzed associations, with participants grouped by hip strength relative to the sample mean.

Main Results:

  • Improved dynamic balance was significantly associated with better horizontal hop performance (β = 0.59, p<0.001).
  • This association held true for posterior balance directions.
  • The predictive relationship was consistent across all hip strength groups (p>0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Enhanced dynamic balance is a key predictor of superior horizontal hop performance.
  • Findings establish reference data for healthy populations, useful for comparison with injured groups.
