Short-term preoperative urinary catheter use may reduce urethral stricture risk after transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P). This retrospective study found a lower stricture rate in patients who had a catheter before surgery.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Surgical Outcomes
Background:
- Postoperative urethral stricture is a complication following transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P).
- The role of preoperative urinary catheterization in preventing this complication is not well-established.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between short-term preoperative urinary catheter use and the incidence of postoperative urethral stricture in patients undergoing TUR-P.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 150 patients who underwent monopolar TUR-P.
- Patients were categorized into two groups: with and without preoperative urethral catheterization.
- Urethral stricture diagnosis confirmed via clinical assessment, urethrography, and cystoscopy.
Main Results:
- The overall urethral stricture rate was 8.7%.
- Patients with preoperative catheterization had a significantly lower stricture rate (2.9%) compared to those without (13.6%) (p=0.020).
- No correlation found between catheter duration and stricture development; hypertension showed an inverse association.
Conclusions:
- Short-term preoperative urethral catheterization may be linked to a reduced risk of postoperative urethral stricture after TUR-P.
- The retrospective nature of this study precludes definitive causal conclusions.
- Further prospective research is warranted to confirm these findings.
