Comparison of effective phacoemulsification times used in cataract surgery between the Veritas Vision System and the

Purpose:
To compare the effective phacoemulsification time used in cataract surgery and postoperative outcomes between the Veritas and the Centurion Vision System.
Methods:
A retrospective analysis was conducted on 90 eyes from 82 patients with senile cataracts who underwent cataract extraction by phacoemulsification in XX Medical Center from December 2022 to May 2023. According to the Lens Opacities Classification System III (LOCS III) grading of nucleus opalescence (NO), eyes with grades 3-5 were included, subdivided into moderate (NO 3≤, <NO4) and hard (NO4≤, ≤NO5) cataracts. The Veritas Vision System was utilized for 43 eyes, comprising 26 moderate and 17 hard cataracts, while the Centurion Vision System was utilized for 47 eyes, including 26 moderate and 21 hard cataracts. Intraoperative parameters were ultrasound time (UST, seconds), average phacoemulsification power (AVG, %), and effective phacoemulsification time (EPT, %·s) for the Veritas group; and cumulative dissipated energy (CDE, %·s) for the Centurion group. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and endothelial cell counts (ECC) were measured one month postoperatively. All parameters were compared between the subgroups.
Results:
In both the moderate and hard cataract groups, the EPT in the Veritas group was lower than the CDE in the Centurion group (p=0.035 and p=0.009, respectively). However, no significant differences in postoperative BCVA or ECC changes were observed.
Conclusions:
The Veritas Vision System demonstrated lower effective phacoemulsification times in the moderate and hard cataract groups. Both systems showed effective and safe surgical outcomes.
