In this issue of Molecular Cell, Zaratiana and colleagues have evaluated the activity of cis-regulatory elements (CREs) by combining massively parallel reporter assays (MPRAs) and microbial perturbation experiments.1 The work uncovers a direct link between microbial metabolites and the regulatory DNA sequences that control hepatic transcription.
