A novel nickel-containing polyoxometalate (POM) was synthesized using a hydrothermal method. This new POM exhibits unique V-shaped and boat-shaped structures and functions as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for Knoevenagel condensation reactions.
Area of Science:
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Materials Science
- Catalysis
Background:
- Polyoxometalates (POMs) are versatile inorganic clusters with diverse structures and applications.
- Developing novel POMs with unique architectures and catalytic properties is an active area of research.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize a new nickel-added polyoxometalate (POM) with a complex structure.
- To investigate the structural characteristics of the synthesized POM.
- To evaluate the catalytic activity of the POM in organic synthesis.
Main Methods:
- Hydrothermal synthesis.
- Lacunary-directing strategy.
- Structural characterization (implied).
- Catalytic evaluation of Knoevenagel condensation.
Main Results:
- Successful synthesis of a Ni-added POM, H₄(NH₄)₆NaK[Ni(H₂O)₆][{Ni₀.₅(H₂O)₁.₅}₂(Ge₂W₇O₃₂)Ni₁₁(μ₂-OH)₂(μ₅-O)(H₂O)₇(B-α-GeW₉O₃₄)₂]·12H₂O (1).
- The polyoxoanion features a rare V-shaped {Ni₁₁} cluster and an unprecedented boat-shaped {NiGe₂W₇} fragment.
- Compound 1 demonstrated excellent heterogeneous catalytic activity for the Knoevenagel condensation of aldehydes with malononitrile under mild conditions.
Conclusions:
- A novel Ni-added POM with unique structural motifs (V-shaped {Ni₁₁} cluster and boat-shaped {NiGe₂W₇} fragment) has been synthesized.
- The synthesized POM serves as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for Knoevenagel condensation, highlighting its potential in organic synthesis.

Epoxidation with Peroxy Acids
Epoxidation of alkenes via oxidation with peroxy acids involves the conversion of a carbon–carbon double bond to an epoxide using the oxidizing agent meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid, commonly known as MCPBA. Since the O–O bond of peroxy acids is very weak, the addition of electrophilic oxygen of peroxy acids to...
