Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify factors associated with medical student research publication.
  • To explore challenges faced by students, supervisors, and research personnel.
  • To inform strategies for enhancing student research productivity in medical schools.

Main Methods:

  • A concurrent triangulation mixed-methods design was employed over four academic years (2017-2021).
  • Quantitative data from 187 student proposals, 778 student CVs, and 87 supervisor CVs were analyzed.
  • Qualitative data from 30 semi-structured interviews with students, supervisors, and research personnel were collected.

Main Results:

  • Only 21.4% of student research projects resulted in peer-reviewed publications.
  • No significant association was found between publication and student gender or prior research experience.
  • Key barriers included time constraints, lack of motivation, insufficient research skills, inadequate mentorship, and limited early research exposure.

Conclusions:

  • The low publication rate (21.4%) highlights systemic challenges in mentorship and institutional support.
  • Interventions such as protected research time, incentive systems for mentorship, and post-project support are recommended.
  • Further multi-institutional studies are needed to validate findings and evaluate mentorship models.
