Comparative evaluation of clinical performance of occlusal laminates fabricated using two CAD-CAM ceramics: A pilot

Background:
Attrition and erosion are common wasting diseases of the teeth, which left untreated cause extensive loss of tooth structure, leading to sensitivity and pain. Ceramic occlusal laminates are a new treatment modality for management of these conditions keeping in view the principles of "Minimally Invasive Dentistry". This treatment modality offers durable restorations utilizing the latest materials and equipment with minimal preparation of tooth structure. Two ceramic materials have been evaluated for their clinical performance in the management of dental attrition and erosion.
Methods:
Forty Computer aided design-Computer aided manufacturing laminates (CAD-CAM) were placed in twenty patients in the age group 30 to 60 with occlusal wear of teeth. Two teeth in each patient, one mandibular first molar on the right side and one on the left side were prepared to receive a Lithium disilicate laminate and a Zirconia laminate respectively. The restorations were fabricated using Lithium disilicate ingots and Zirconia blanks respectively and luted using resin cement. The restorations were evaluated clinically for fracture and dislodgement. Data collected was subjected to suitable statistical analysis.
Results:
Statistical analysis revealed that incidences of fracture and dislodgement were not significant for both the materials over the entire duration of observation of the study. There were three incidences of fracture for both the materials and five of dislodgement till the end of the study.
Conclusion:
There was no statistically significant fracture or dislodgement for both the materials. The restorations were stable at the end of the study.
