Materials And Methods:
This primer article outlines key plastic surgery concepts relevant to radiation oncologists. It reviews principles of tissue healing, reconstructive surgical options, and the interaction between plastic surgery techniques and radiation treatments based on the existing literature.
Results:
We describe various reconstructive strategies employed by plastic surgeons, emphasizing their relevance to patients undergoing radiation therapy. Understanding these techniques allows radiation oncologists to anticipate potential complications, optimize treatment planning, and support improved long-term outcomes. For example, radiation can compromise vascularized flaps, necessitating careful coordination to minimize complications. Furthermore, implant-based breast reconstruction poses unique challenges, including capsular contracture risks when combined with radiation. Awareness of these principles helps radiation oncologists tailor treatment plans to preserve reconstructive outcomes and improve patient quality of life.
Conclusion:
A foundational knowledge of plastic surgery is essential for radiation oncologists to provide comprehensive care that addresses cancer treatment and its impact on quality of life. Enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration can significantly improve patient outcomes.
