Objective:
To compare the possibility of using behavioral thresholds and auditory steady-state responses in a free field in pediatric CI-users as predictors of speech intelligibility.
Material And Methods:
170 CI-users with reliable behavioral feedback aged 6 to 17 years were included in the study. The assessment of behavioral thresholds and speech intelligibility was carried out in a free field. An objective assessment of sound perception was carried out in a free field by Auditory Steady State Responses (ASSR). A correlation analysis was performed between the indicators of speech intelligibility and the values of behavioral thresholds and ASSR.
Results:
A significant negative correlation (p<0.01) of speech intelligibility and ASSR in all carrier frequencies was revealed. It makes possible to consider the threshold values ASSR in free field as a reliable predictor of speech intelligibility in silence. The relationship between speech intelligibility and behavioral thresholds was considered insignificant (in the range of all frequencies, p ≥0.05).
Conclusion:
The ability to accurately predict speech intelligibility based on auditory steady-state responses (ASSR) is a useful option for determination of the parameters of electrical stimulation in CI-users.
