Serious games (SGs) using MediaPipe (MP) and Leap Motion Controller (LMC) hand-tracking show high usability in neurological rehabilitation. While both systems performed well, users slightly preferred the LMC for its overall experience.

Area of Science:

  • Neurological Rehabilitation
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Game Design

Background:

  • Serious games (SGs) with hand-tracking are vital for neurological rehabilitation.
  • Leap Motion Controller (LMC) is established, while MediaPipe (MP) is an emerging software solution.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the usability of MP- and LMC-based SGs.
  • To evaluate user preferences between MP and LMC hand-tracking systems.

Main Methods:

  • Developed seven SGs for Grasp and Pinch gestures.
  • Tested with fifty healthy volunteers using the System Usability Scale (SUS).
  • Collected comparative preferences via an ad-hoc questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • Both MP (88/100) and LMC (90/100) achieved excellent SUS scores, showing no significant usability difference.

  • A comparative questionnaire revealed a stronger user preference for LMC (63%) over MP (17%).
  • Conclusions:

    • Both MP and LMC demonstrate high usability for SGs in neurological rehabilitation.
    • LMC was preferred in direct comparison, but MP's usability warrants further research, including clinical trials.
