A recent study by Pandey et al. shows that during variable cold with intermittent warming, plasmodesmata act as tissue-level gates for robust bud dormancy release. By controlling callose deposition, plasmodesmata restrict intercellular communication, preventing premature dormancy release, suggesting a bet-hedging strategy that could enhance survival under climate warming.
