Background:
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint disease that increases with age and negatively affects quality of life. This study aimed to assess the proportion of presumptive knee OA and its predictors among the adults in Al-Qunfudah governorate, Saudi Arabia.
Materials And Methods:
An analytical cross-sectional study that included a convenience sample of 723 adults was done between May and August 2023 in Saudi Arabia. The research data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire and then analyzed using RStudio (version 4.3.0).
Results:
The proportion of presumptive knee OA was 21.9% of adults. Advanced age, marital status, retirement, past trauma, knee surgery, and obesity were factors linked to knee OA (P values were 0.001 for each of them). Furthermore, knee osteoarthritis was linked to diabetes mellitus (P = 0.007), hypertension (P = 0.039), and quitting smoking (P = 0.007). Predictors for knee OA were advanced age (OR = 1.06, 95% CI, 1.02-1.09, P = 0.002) or having a positive history of knee joint trauma (OR = 3.59, 95% CI, 2.05-6.29, P < 0.001).
Conclusion:
The proportion of presumptive knee OA is common among adults in Al-Qunfudah governorate, and its predictors are advanced age or prior knee trauma. Educating people to adopt a healthy lifestyle is crucial to protecting themselves from knee OA.
