Maximizing Endodontic Cleanliness: The Role of Final Irrigation Techniques

Four irrigation techniques were evaluated for endodontic canal penetration. While EndoActivator (EA), XP Finisher, and XP Finisher R showed improved main canal penetration, no technique effectively reached lateral canals.

- Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and retroalveolar imaging were used to assess irrigant penetration.

- A statistically significant difference in main canal penetration was found, with Irriflex showing less penetration than EA, XP Finisher, and XP Finisher R (P < .05).
- No significant difference in lateral canal penetration was observed among the four tested irrigation techniques.
- All tested techniques demonstrated limitations in reaching the created lateral canals.
Conclusions:
- EndoActivator (EA), XP Finisher, and XP Finisher R demonstrated superior main canal irrigant penetration compared to Irriflex.
- Despite improvements in main canal penetration, none of the evaluated techniques significantly outperformed the others in reaching lateral canals.
- Further advancements in irrigation technology are necessary to ensure complete disinfection of complex root canal systems, including lateral canals.
