Abstract:
Human gut health has been extensively investigated, since balanced intestinal microbiota constitute a key determinant of overall health. In this context, the application of probiotics in the management of dysbiosis, particularly the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii, has garnered increasing scientific interest owing to its capacity to modulate the intestinal microbiota. In additio n, prebiotic supplementation has proven to be relevant. This narrative review aimed to evaluate, within the context of intestinal dysbiosis and prebiotic-probiotic interactions, how different prebiotics modulate the activity of S. boulardii, as well as to discuss their potential implications for gut microbiota homeostasis. To conduct this literature review, searches were carried out in the PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases, covering the period from 2015 to 2025 to ensure the inclusion of up-to-date scientific evidence. Results indicated that various types of prebiotics, at different concentrations and within distinct food matrices, were capable of potentiating the action of S. boulardii, thereby enhancing both its efficacy and viability over time. It can be concluded that the combined use of S. boulardii and selected prebiotics holds promising potential as a strategy for maintaining intestinal microbiota homeostasis, thereby opening new perspectives for future applications in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical formulations.
