Separation of 161Tb from thermal neutron irradiated 160Gd targets by extraction chromatography

Abstract:
A method has been developed for the radiochemical separation of medical radionuclide 161Tb from thermal neutron-irradiated 160Gd2O3 targets weighing 10-13 mg. Two columns containing LN Resin have been used to separate Tb and Gd, and DGA Resin has been used to preconcentrate the metals and adjust the acidity. The purification from organic impurities has been carried out using Prefilter. This technique does not involve evaporation steps, which is a significant advantage when implementing the process in a hot cell. The product yield was 80-85%, and the Tb/Gd separation factor was approximately 104. Up to 1 GBq of 161Tb has been obtained.
