Pyrocarbon shoulder hemiarthroplasty: A surgical technique

Abstract:
Pyrocarbon shoulder hemiarthroplasty has been shown to reduce glenoid erosion that occurs with metal hemiarthroplasty and avoid the risk of glenoid loosening in total shoulder replacement. We have been using pyrocarbon hemiarthroplasty in our unit since 2014. We have developed a systematic reproducible surgical technique that reliably restores the anatomy of the proximal humerus and avoids overstuffing. Here, we describe our technique and present the results of a joint registry comparison of survivorship to the other classes of shoulder arthroplasty.
