Auricular Trauma Protocol for Trauma Spectrum Disorders: Development, Rationale, and Clinical Applications

The Auricular Trauma Protocol (ATP), developed by Helms, Elkiss, and Pittman, is a six-point auricular acupuncture protocol designed for rapid, field-applicable treatment of trauma spectrum disorders. Initially developed for U.S. military use, ATP has since been applied in civilian contexts for post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, insomnia, and pain. This article reviews the protocol's historical development, theoretical underpinnings in neurobiology, point rationale, and clinical applications, including evidence from case studies and field implementation. The ATP exemplifies a neurobiologically informed and trauma-sensitive acupuncture intervention that is safe, efficient, and highly acceptable in both military and civilian populations.
