Cynicism among friends accuracy and bias in cynicism judgments

Friendships are critical social alliances, and how people perceive their friends' psychological characteristics influences their maintenance and stability. In this study, I examined judgments of friends' cynicism (i.e., mistrust and antagonism toward others and perceptions of self-interest) using data from 173 friend dyads (N = 346). In the Truth and Bias Model, people systematically underestimated their friends' cynicism, suggesting a positivity bias that may facilitate cooperation by softening perceptions of antagonism. Participants also showed assumed similarity, projecting their own levels of cynicism onto their friends, as well as modest tracking accuracy, such that judgments aligned somewhat with friends' self-reported cynicism. Tests of moderation by friendship length, trust, and closeness provided little evidence that these factors shaped accuracy or bias, with the exception that newer friends underestimated cynicism more strongly than long-term friends. These findings suggest that people view their friends both accurately and positively, balancing the need to detect self-interest with the relational benefits of maintaining trust and similarity.
