The glenoid labrum has 2 distinct structural morphologies that allow for a high degree of range of motion while also maintaining stability to the shoulder. Both cadaveric and imaging-based anatomic studies have shown that the superior labrum has an unique anatomy compared with the remainder of the anterior, posterior, and inferior labrum. The superior labrum has a loose, mobile interface with the glenoid, whereas the inferior portion of the labrum has a firm, static attachment to the glenoid. Additionally, these studies have shown that the anterior and posterior labrum provides increased depth and concavity to the glenoid compared with the superior labrum, which does not provide much increased concavity. These unique properties must be accounted for during the diagnosis and treatment of glenoid labral injuries.
