Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the surface roughness of nano-hybrid resin composite restorations.
  • To compare the effects of charcoal toothpaste, conventional toothpaste, and deionized water on composite roughness.
  • To assess abrasive wear after simulated toothbrushing over a six-month period.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty extracted molars restored with nano-hybrid resin composite were divided into three groups (n=20): charcoal toothpaste, conventional toothpaste, and distilled water control.
  • Simulated toothbrushing was performed for 5,000 cycles (equivalent to six months of use) using a 200g-force and 120 cycles/minute protocol.
  • Surface roughness was measured using laser microscopy at baseline and post-brushing.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in initial surface roughness were observed between the groups (p=0.6189).
  • Charcoal toothpaste resulted in significantly greater surface roughness after brushing compared to conventional toothpaste and the control group (p=0.0323).
  • Within-group analysis showed significant roughness increase only for the charcoal toothpaste group (p=0.0147).

Conclusions:

  • Charcoal-containing toothpaste significantly increased the surface roughness of nano-hybrid resin composite.
