[Neurocysticercosis]

Neurocysticercosis is a parasitic disease in which the central nervous system is infected by Cysticercus cellulosae, the larvae from the pork tapeworm Taenia solium. Almost all cases are imported and acquired in developing countries with poor sanitation. Symptoms include seizures and chronic headaches. A medical history that includes travel to endemic areas and appropriate imaging studies aid diagnosis. Treatment involves anthelmintics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and anticonvulsants. With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, the prognosis is good. Although rare, this condition should be considered when adults experience sudden seizures.
