Background:
Retropharyngeal schwannomas are exceptionally rare head and neck benign tumors, often posing diagnostic and surgical challenges due to their deep location and proximity to critical structures. Surgical resection remains the treatment of choice, but the optimal approach is still debated.
Methods:
We report a case of retropharyngeal schwannoma treated at our institution using a fully endoscopic transoral resection. Surgical technique and perioperative management is herein illustrated. Relevant literature is briefly reviewed to contextualize surgical indications.
Results:
A 35-year-old man presented with progressive dysphagia and globus sensation caused by a left retropharyngeal mass. Complete tumor removal was achieved through an endoscopic transoral route using CO₂ laser dissection. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, with complete symptom resolution and no recurrence at 23-month follow-up.
Conclusions:
Endoscopic transoral resection represents a safe and minimally invasive option for selected retropharyngeal masses. Careful patient selection and detailed anatomical knowledge are essential to achieve optimal outcomes.
