Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Background:

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) provides a framework for understanding health and disability.
Existing instruments may not comprehensively assess functioning in mental health disorders according to ICF criteria.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate the Functioning Assessment Scale for Mental Health (FAS-MH).
To create a multidimensional instrument grounded in the ICF for assessing functioning in individuals with mental disorders.

Main Methods:

Item generation in Spanish and English, followed by a two-round Delphi survey for content validation.
Psychometric testing of the Spanish version in 334 adults with bipolar disorder, depression, or schizophrenia.

Main Results:

The 37-item FAS-MH covers 34 ICF categories across Body Functions, Activities and Participation, and Environmental Factors.
Confirmatory factor analysis supported a hierarchical model with a second-order Functioning factor.

Limitations include a small sample for content validation and the untested psychometric properties of the English version.
