Supraorbital Vibration as an Adjuvant to Topical Anesthesia During Intravitreal Therapy

Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of supraorbital vibration anesthesia in combination with topical anesthesia during intravitreal therapy. The primary objective is to assess the effectiveness of vibrational anesthesia in reducing pain and stress associated with the procedure. Methods: A retrospective chart review of 842 patients undergoing intravitreal therapy was conducted, with 834 patients opting for vibrational anesthesia. Additionally, a survey of 50 patients was conducted to evaluate the effects of vibrational anesthesia on patient experiences. Results: No adverse events were observed following intravitreal therapy in conjunction with vibrational anesthesia. Additionally, a survey of 50 patients revealed that 94% preferred vibrational anesthesia, and 84% would request it in future treatments. The majority of patients surveyed reported a reduction in pain (82%) and stress (72%) with the use of vibrations. Conclusions: The results suggest that supraorbital vibration anesthesia is safe and effective in reducing pain and stress during intravitreal therapy. Further studies are warranted to validate these findings and determine optimal device placement.
