Introduction:
Energy drink consumption is increasingly common among adolescents, particularly among young athletes. Understanding the motivations and associated patterns is essential for the design of effective prevention strategies.
Objective:
To examine energy drink consumption habits among 15-19-year-old secondary school students in Western Hungary, with a focus on the role of sports activity, family background, and peer influence.
Method:
A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted between 2021 and 2024 in Western Transdanubia, the questionnaire was filled out by 486 high school students.
Results:
13.4% of young people consume energy drinks daily and 21.4% weekly. Athletes start consuming it earlier (average 13.42 years) and use it more often for performance enhancement. Regular consumption is mostly influenced by the family pattern (father), the frequency of consumption and the age at the first try (p<0.05). Peer pressure and subjective knowledge level proved to be less significant predictors.
Conclusion:
Performance-related energy drink consumption is more prevalent among athletes and deserves attention in health education. Family patterns and education should be key elements in prevention efforts. Orv Hetil. 2026; 167(21): 833-841.
