Abstract:
Depression represents a prevalent psychiatric condition, with women exhibiting a substantially higher incidence compared to men. Across various life stages, including adolescence, the perinatal period, perimenopause, and older adulthood, fluctuations in hormonal, psychological, and social factors contribute to distinct pathogenic mechanisms and clinical presentations of depression in women. Multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has emerged as a valuable modality for investigating the neural substrates associated with these stage-specific differences. This review outlines the current applications and advancements in MRI-based research aimed at understanding depression in women across the lifespan.
