Background:

Migraine is a common neurological disorder impacting quality of life.
Migraine surgery is an option for chronic or refractory cases, demanding complex patient understanding.
Patients increasingly use online resources, making health literacy vital for informed decisions.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the readability of online patient information regarding migraine surgery.
To determine if online migraine surgery resources meet recommended health literacy standards.

Main Methods:

A systematic Google search for "migraine surgery" was conducted.
Readability of 31 articles from 11 websites was assessed using 6 validated indices.
Analysis of variance was used to compare readability scores between websites.

Main Results:

Online migraine surgery information averaged a high school/early college reading level, exceeding the recommended sixth-grade level.
The average Flesch Reading Ease score was 44.9, indicating difficult text.
Significant readability variations existed across websites, with complex terminology and limited aids contributing to poor accessibility.

Conclusions:

Online patient information on migraine surgery is generally too difficult for the average reader.
Poor readability creates barriers to informed decision-making for migraine surgery patients.
Enhancing accessibility via simpler language, glossaries, and visual aids can improve patient understanding and engagement.
