The Most Influential Publications in Genioplasty: A Bibliometric Review

Introduction:
Genioplasty is a widely performed procedure for correcting chin deformities. Given its clinical importance and expanding applications, we believe a bibliometric review of the 50 most-cited genioplasty articles is warranted. This is especially relevant given the innovative developments in biomaterials and 3-D planning.
Methods:
The Clarivate Web of Science database was queried to obtain the bibliometric data used in this study. The keyword "genioplasty" was entered on May 6, 2024. Search results identified 917 publications from 1945 to 2024. The included studies were assessed for citation density by year, authorship, affiliated institution, publication year, journal, country of origin, topic categorization, and level of evidence (LOE). Each publication was also categorized into its respective LOE.
Results:
The top 50 most-cited genioplasty publications were cited a total of 2777 times, averaging 55.54 citations per article. The United States contributed the majority of influential genioplasty studies (58%), followed by South Korea. The most common topic was outcomes alone (n=12), followed by outcomes alone and combined (n=4), and outcomes combined (n=10). Most studies were LOE IV (n=29), followed by LOE V (n=15) and LOE 3 (n=6). None was LOE I or II.
Conclusion:
The literature on genioplasty is predominantly low-level evidence, emphasizing outcomes and technical advancements. This review highlights key contributors and trends of the current body of literature. We believe it will provide a framework for future developments in genioplasty research.
