The effect of iron and iron parameters on cognitive functions in the older adults

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between iron and iron parameters and cognitive functions in older adults using computer-based tests (FTT,S-VRT,C-VRT,SR-VRT,CR-VRT). Study was conducted in Ankara Bilkent City Hospital. Computer-based tests were administered to older adults. A significant negative correlation was found between MMSE scores and test times of computer-based tests (p < 0.05). A positive correlation was found between serum Fe levels and MMSE; significant negative correlations were found between results of computer-based tests and significant positive correlations were found between number of correct answers on SR-VRT and CR-VRT (p < 0.05). FTT duration was significantly shorter in normal group, durations of the S-VRT, C-VRT, and CR-VRT were significantly longer in iron deficiency anemia (IDA) group compared to normal group, and number of correct answers on CR-VRT was significantly lower in IDA group (p < 0.05). Results showed iron deficiency in older adults can have negative effects on cognitive functions. These effects could be demonstrated more objectively and with relatively higher sensitivity using computer-based tests. In this respect, it is thought that the method's potential to provide faster and more reliable results could contribute to early diagnosis and monitoring of the treatment process in clinical applications.
