Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder01:28

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by recurrent obsessions, compulsions, or both, which consume significant time and interfere with daily functioning. Obsessions involve persistent, intrusive, and unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that evoke anxiety. Common examples include irrational fears of contamination or harm. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce the anxiety caused by obsessions. For instance, individuals...
Information Processing Approach01:30

Information Processing Approach

The information-processing theory of cognitive development centers on fundamental mental processes, including attention, memory, and problem-solving skills. Researchers in this field examine how cognitive abilities, such as working memory, evolve and influence children's overall development. Studies indicate that children with stronger working memory tend to excel in reading comprehension, math, and problem-solving compared to peers with less efficient memory skills. Low working memory is also...
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings.
Personality Disorders: Dependent and Obsessive-Compulsive01:24

Personality Disorders: Dependent and Obsessive-Compulsive

Dependent personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder are two separate psychological conditions that influence behavior, relationships, and overall life functioning. Though both involve maladaptive behaviors, their core characteristics and motivations differ significantly.
 Dependent Personality Disorder
Dependent personality disorder is characterized by an excessive reliance on others to manage various aspects of life. Individuals with this disorder often struggle with...
Cognitive Development During Adolescence01:18

Cognitive Development During Adolescence

During adolescence, individuals experience significant cognitive development that enhances their understanding of others' emotions and thoughts, known as cognitive empathy. This period is marked by an increased ability to adapt to others' perspectives and a more nuanced understanding of others' mental states, a skill that is foundational for social problem-solving and conflict avoidance. The development of cognitive empathy relies heavily on the theory of mind — the recognition that people have...
Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Summary

Adolescent obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) severity is linked to poorer executive functions (EF), specifically cognitive flexibility. Sensory processing characteristics were associated with OCD severity but not independently with EF outcomes in this study.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Developmental Psychology

Background:

  • Pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) research often studies sensory processing and executive functions (EF) separately.
  • Understanding the interplay between OCD severity, sensory processing, and EF is crucial for adolescents with OCD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationships among OCD symptom severity, sensory processing, and performance-based EF in adolescents with OCD.
  • To assess if sensory processing and OCD symptom severity predict executive outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • One hundred adolescents (12-18 years) with DSM-5 diagnosed OCD were assessed.
  • Measures included the Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS) for symptom severity, Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile (AASP) for sensory processing, and multiple tests for EF (WCST, SCWT, CCTT, VFT).
  • Bivariate correlations and multivariate linear regression were used for analysis.

Main Results:

  • OCD symptom severity (CY-BOCS) correlated with sensory sensitivity, sensory avoiding, and low registration.
  • Greater OCD severity was linked to poorer performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and longer completion time on the Children's Color Trails Test (CCTT-2).
  • Regression models showed OCD severity independently predicted poorer WCST performance and longer CCTT-2 times, but sensory processing measures did not independently predict EF outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • Sensory processing characteristics are associated with OCD symptom severity in adolescents.
  • OCD symptom severity is independently linked to cognitive flexibility-related executive function deficits in this population.
  • Further research with longitudinal and comparative designs is needed to clarify the directionality and clinical significance of these findings.
