Abstract:
In Bali Province, Taenia saginata is endemic in Ketewel Village (Gianyar District), whereas Taenia solium has historically been endemic in Dukuh Village (Karangasem District). This study evaluated the current status of taeniasis in these endemic settings between 2022 and 2025. Epidemiological surveys were conducted in Ketewel during 2022-2025 and in Dukuh in 2022 and 2025. A total of 19 cases of T. saginata taeniasis were identified in Ketewel during the study period, with no significant difference compared with 2018-2021 (p = 0.810). In contrast, none of the 266 and 107 fecal samples examined in Dukuh in 2022 and 2025, respectively, were positive for taeniid eggs. Questionnaire and interview findings suggested that persistent raw beef consumption contributed to sustained T. saginata transmission in Ketewel, whereas improved sanitation, pig confinement, and dietary changes likely interrupted T. solium transmission in Dukuh. These findings highlight the importance of sustained health education and sentinel surveillance to prevent re-emergence and geographic spread of taeniasis in Bali.
