Body image and emotions in Italian women: a qualitative and lexicometric study

Objective:
Body image is a multidimensional construct with a significant role in women's perceptions and emotions, impacting daily functioning. Understanding bodily issues is crucial to implementing personalized psychological interventions and informing prevention. This exploratory study examines the role of body image in a female population, highlighting related emotions and thoughts.
Methods:
Thirty women responded to four online open-ended questions to assess their body image perceptions. Moreover, socio-demographic data were collected. A Lexicometric, Co-occurrence and a Word Association analysis was performed through the T-LAB software. Additionally, a qualitative thematic analysis was conducted.
Results:
Four main themes emerged: (1) body description, with emphasis on strength/health, (2) body perception, in terms of resources, change, and care, (3) evaluation of external perception, from positive alignment with standards to disinterest, and (4) body sensations and well-being (e.g., emotions and aesthetical appearance).
Discussion:
The body is an instrument to support functional relationships, impacting well-being. Tailored interventions are needed to improve positive body perception, reducing the impairments of body image and its related dysfunctional emotions.
